We bloggers (forum posters) are on the fortunate site that we can speculate, make improvement suggestions and have great ideas how a game would be a great game, without facing the need to form that thoughts into something playable and fun for many players, not only ourselves. Long sentence.. but that just popped up my mind [...]

Again just a short post..but it’s better than nothing. I’m quiet busy in RL so posts are atm most likely very short one. In WAR we have the statues in the capitols for chars who earn most renown in the week (though sometimes I get the feeling that the update schedule is much faster). I think it [...]

Most of this past weekend was spent playing Blood Bowl by Cyanide Studios, to the point that my fiancé calling me a crack addict because of my want to play it constantly. So in Eurogamer terms, the game is a 2/10, although I’ve now played it for too long to meet the high EG standards. Top-notch [...]

People often credit WoW’s success because, in part, it’s a little bit of everything for everyone (in theory at least), and while that’s a great way to get into the genre, if you really want to focus on any one aspect you soon find WoW is somewhat limited. Yes WoW has PvP, but it’s limited [...]

Every once in a while, we all pull a Eurogamer and get our facts wrong. It happens, most people apologize, no big deal. Sometimes, for whatever reason, we defend a company and help support their bullshit, going so far as to create misleading examples to further the cause. In most cases, others will point out [...]

After 15 years of leading Mythic Entertainment, my time with the studio (and EA of course) I co-founded with Rob Denton has come to an end.  Early in May, Electronic Arts let me know that they wanted to make some changes within the Games Label and as a result of those changes I have been [...]

LotD officially launched yesterday in Warhammer Online, just not fully. Only the event-winning side had access for the first 24 hours, and the new dungeon was closed, leaving everyone to try out the various PQs and lair bosses. The good news is the new PQs are interesting, with some nice variety if not overall challenge (hard [...]

Since Mythic implemented the quest for defending keeps, I’m not happy with it. It is no major issue, but from time to time it annoys me a bit ;) In patch 1.3 they added medals as quest reward, but still I don’t like the principle there. I think it’s a good idea to reward fighting, but [...]

Blizzard on WG: We did not want that PvP anyway
syncaine.wordpress.com
6/23/2009 3:00:03 PM

100+ vs 100+ player battles are apparently too difficult for Blizzard to figure out after only having 5+ years to work on it. Or, if you try to issue a pass like some people, it’s just technically not possible to support something ‘so successful’ that you have to scrap its original intent. I mean, that’s [...]

syncaine.wordpress.com
6/19/2009 5:11:52 PM

The Casualties (of whatever game we play) guild is trying to put together a static group for DDO, something I’m rather interested in. DDO is a tough MMO to crack, because it’s not only forced grouping, but also suffers more than most if you join a bad PUG group due to how the quest instances [...]

I saw this excellent use of The Sims 3 thanks to Raph Koster’s blog. Great writing and use of screen shots, and certainly shows the depth a sandbox game can go if used correctly. Looking forward to future updates for sure.

The Sims 3: Taking some notes from the MMO genre.
syncaine.wordpress.com
6/15/2009 3:31:53 PM

I know I’ve already done an extensive, professional game journalist Sims 3 review here, but despite my high Eurogamer standards back then, I’ve got a few more things to say about the game and how it relates to the MMO genre. For starters, the MMO-like launcher is a great tool for getting user-created content into your [...]

syncaine.wordpress.com

…unbearable. This is worse than waiting for a beta to go live, because at least in beta everyone is playing like its beta and you know it does not count/matter. This is worse because half the population is in “I don’t care, I’m rerolling” mode, and the other half is still going full-time because they are [...]

Why do we still force alts to re-grind, and what about the new guy?
syncaine.wordpress.com

Starting with the genre’s second major title, EQ1, the solution to raising the level cap without increasing the gap new players must cross to join their friends has been to reduce the time it takes to go from 1 to cap. While this does indeed help new players play with their max level friends faster, [...]

Why your MMO is dying, and EVE is still growing
syncaine.wordpress.com
6/11/2009 8:19:21 PM

EVE Online has a mile-long list of unique features that set it apart from all other MMOs, including being the only MMO with a constant and ever-increasing player base. WoW grew faster and bigger than any MMO before or after (in terms of profits anyway, other games hold the honored records for most pink bunnies [...]

Subscription vs RMT: Who will save the poor noobs with no time to play?
syncaine.wordpress.com

It seems it’s been too long since everyone’s second favorite topic (hardcore vs casual being #1), RMT, has been discussed. Tobold has two posts about it and recently DDO went F2P. As readers here know, I’m not a huge fan of RMT games, and it’s certainly not because I could not afford to keep up with [...]

DarkFall update, in which PvP happens.
syncaine.wordpress.com
6/8/2009 3:43:36 PM

The last patch for DarkFall fixed my memory crash and resolved the sound = lag issue, the two things really putting a damper on my enjoyment of the game from the tech side. This, combined with the “We are moving, lets just PvP for the F of it” attitude thanks to NA-1 coming soon has [...]
